Impact of reuse
Reuse is more than a packaging solution. In the best sense of the circular economy, reuse enables the transition from linear value chains to closed loops where resources are reused rather than lost. In doing so, reuse addresses multiple ecological challenges simultaneously. Resources are conserved, waste is avoided, and environmental impacts along the entire value chain are reduced: water, raw material consumption, and CO₂ emissions.

In 2023, the average amount of packaging waste generated per person in the EU was (Eurostat).
of the 14.8 billion to-go packaging units in 2023 in Germany were reusable (according to WWF DE, 2024)
of the plastics produced between 2015 and 2050 ended up in landfills or in the environment (Geyer et al., 2017).
of plastic waste in Germany was recycled into new products in 2023 (BKV, 2024).

While recycling is widely seen as the answer to our waste crisis, the reality is that most materials are downcycled or incinerated. Reuse offers a true circular solution: keeping packaging in active circulation and eliminating waste at the source.

Image: Without reuse and recycling, a large amount of waste is produced, which must be incinerated or landfilled (A). If part of the waste is recycled, the amount decreases (B). If products are reused as long as possible and recycled at the end, the least waste is produced (C).
Reuse works through participation. Higher cycle numbers amplify the positive ecological benefits.
Only returned packaging can be used multiple times
With each reuse, the ecological footprint per packaging unit decreases
A simple system increases participation and returns
Reuse has the fastest impact when material-intensive packaging is replaced (plastic, aluminum, or glass)
A resource-efficient design reduces material use and packaging weight
Short transport routes, bundled reverse logistics, and lightweight packaging additionally reduce emissions
